Programmes from the 1949 Brass Band Festival Concert

Here are two Programmes from the Brass Band Festival Competition held on Saturday 12th November 1949 at the Royal Albert Hall. The first programme (shown right) covers the midday contest that saw 17 Brass Bands competing for the title of The "Daily Herald" National Brass Band Championship. Those 17 Bands then amassed to give a combined performance while the judges considered their decision. That performance was conducted by Pastmaster John Henry Iles, who had originally instigated the competition in 1900.

The second programme (shown right) is for the Grand Festival Concert that was traditionally held in the evening after the Contest. Special guest at this event was HRH The Princess Elizabeth.

Liveryman, Sir Malcolm Sargent conducted the Mass Bands (9 separate Brass Bands - winners from previous years) which were joined by the London Men's Chorus (itself comprised of 8 separate choirs). Sir Malcolm contributed two special arrangements to the evening.
